Addiction
Prevalence
of Addiction
Addiction issues affect a
great number of
couples who are experiencing marital
problems. Sometimes
it is obvious that
the alcohol/drug problem is affecting the relationship.
At other times, neither partner is aware of
the role it is playing in the relationship demise until a crisis ensues. A common reason couples
will seek out
treatment is that the partner has given an ultimatum that the drug or
alcohol
abuse must stop or they will leave.
If you or your partner is
experiencing a drug or alcohol
problem, it is best to get professional help as soon as possible. The sooner you both begin
talking honestly
about your feelings, the better.
There
is Hope
Couples are often quite
overwhelmed when they finally get to
the point where they want counseling. But no matter where they start
from, it
is important for couples to hear that there is hope!
It is possible for couples to get through
these issues. I
work with couples in
these situations to create honest communication, accountability, and
rebuild
trust and intimacy in a step by step process.
I’ve
seen others down the path many times before, so I know the way. I know the bumps on the
road, the obstacles
along the way and the short cuts.
Importance
of Background of Therapist
It is critical that you
work with a skilled professional
with particular training and experience with drug and alcohol issues. There are many reasons for
this. One of the
main reasons is that it is
important for the clinician to do a thorough assessment of the drug and
alcohol
problem. Without
enough experience, a
clinician may not see all of the signs of addiction or they may not be
able to
penetrate the problem. This
could lead
to insufficient treatment and further problems.
An inexperienced
therapist can also fail to provide the
right kind of support for the addicted spouse or enough support. The once a week therapy
session is not enough
for people at this stage. Also,
traditional
psychotherapy can overwhelm an individual in early recovery. I am knowledgeable in
these important aspects
of the healing process. I
assess each
individual in terms of their specific needs and very carefully monitor
their
response to treatment.
Spouses must also get the
support they need, so I make
referrals as appropriate. I
encourage
involving the spouse early. Addiction
effects the whole family and education and support are critical
components to
care.
I
am a 12 Step
supportive therapist. I
have many years
of experience working with individuals in the 12 Steps programs. Please feel free to call
me with any
questions you may have about 12 Step programs or therapy compatible
with 12
Step work.
